Next in our interview series we caught up with Mr Toby Huntington-Whiteley, personal trainer at Kobox gym, brother of Rosie and menswear model himself. We spent an afternoon with him at Blok studios, Shoreditch to hear a bit more about what makes him tick and what life is like behind closed doors.
1.How did you get into personal training?
After I graduated from University I went straight into an office job and hated being sat at a desk for 10 hours a day. It was when the London Olympics were on and I was watching it one day and thought 'those guys are doing what they love, why aren't? I have always been active and love both training and sport so it felt very natural, and necessary even, to sign up for a PT course and I haven't looked back.
2.What's your favourite part of the job?
Seeing my clients achieve their long-term goals or when they do an exercise that they have never been able to complete before.
3. What do you think the key to sticking to fitness regime is? How do you train yourself?
I find the best way to stick to something is to set myself a goal and write a program that I can then follow. I need to be organised about my training otherwise its too easy to miss a session.
4. How important is the clothing you wear for training? What's your workout wardrobe?
It has to be comfortable as a priority. I don't like to wear anything too tight or synthetic. My go-to clothing for training is just a good quality cotton T-shirt and shorts.
5. Any fitness myths or common mistakes people make when it comes to training/keeping fit?
That's easy. Some people think all they have to do is turn up. If you want results you have to work for them, you have to push yourself and it should be difficult. I compare it to someone wanting a promotion or pay rise at work, they will have to work that bit harder and put extra time in to go above what they usually do. Its the same as going to the gym if you really want to see results you have to earn them.
6. What's your go-to breakfast?
I'm not very good with breakfast during the week as I'm up relatively early and don't stop until lunch time, but I can't start the day without a hot drink. On the weekends I love to enjoy a big breakfast and every time it involves bacon. I'll always go for either a full English, eggs and avocado or shakshuka.
7. What's your current workout soundtrack?
I love to workout to music, more often than not I'll be listening to some sort of rock music like the Chilli Peppers, the Black Key or the Foals.
8. When you're not working, how do you like to relax? What does a perfect Sunday look like to you?
Most Sundays I work as it's one of my busy days in terms of clients. When I do have the weekend off I have to get out of London to the countryside. I feel most at home and relaxed when I can breathe fresh air. My favourite places to go for a weekend away back home in Devon or to my fiancée's home in France.
9. First thing you do when you get home?
I get home from work generally pretty late so it's straight in to the shower, watch something on Netflix or I read my book and then I'm bed bound.
10.Where was your last holiday? Best moment of it?
Last holiday was to Venice, I fell in love with the buildings, the culture and obviously the food! We found this amazing local bakery on our first day and had a cup of coffee and a few pastries - it was so good we went back every morning.
11. If you weren't a personal trainer and model what would you be?
This is difficult as I love what I do but if I could turn back time my dream job would be either as professional tennis player or an adventurer. When I was a child I also wanted to work in wildlife conservation.
12. Any other hidden talents?
I'm working on my handstands and would love to be able to start walking on my hands.
13. Favourite Hamilton and Hare item? Why?
I love your tubular t-shirts as they are so comfortable and I can wear them to workout in or just to lounge about in. Also have just tried the sport underwear for the first time and they are brilliant - it's like having a hug all day long. They are so comfortable, the fit was perfect. I couldn't say they improved my performance but there's nothing worse than irritating underwear problems when you're working out - these beauties just let me focus on my training which is what its all about.
