Hamilton + Hare radio: July
The month's best new music, from Peckham to Brooklyn.
Each month we buy our 10 favourite new tracks on Bandcamp, where at least 85% of the money goes directly to the artist or label in line with their Fair Trade Music Policy. Browse our collection here, or listen to the playlist on Spotify.
For a while, there was a fear within music circles that lockdown might sap the UK jazz scene of its energy, just as its star was shining brightest. Not a chance. A fresh crop of artists like Leeds saxophonist Jasmine Myra and London's DoomCannon kept the momentum going with superb new releases this month.
One of the new wave's original driving forces, Peckham's Henry Wu, returned after a few years focusing on his Kamaal Williams project. Emma Jean Thackray and West London broken beat pioneer Kaidi Tatham dropped new material too.
Across the water, fans of the Dap Kings will love Trouble by Brooklyn's soulful 7-piece Say She She, while Detroit's Javonntte, a buy-on-sight name, returned with an LP full of fierce jazz-inflected house.
